How To

Materials not owned by the Library are available free-of-charge through Interlibrary loan (ILL).

  • Requests typically take 3-10 days to arrive from the lending library, however, items not available in the immediate area may take longer.
  • Books are borrowed from another library and loan periods vary depending on the lending institution's policies. Journal articles are provided as photocopies and are yours to keep.
  • All faculty, staff and students are eligible to use the Interlibrary Loan service. Requests should be related to Marymount coursework or a faculty member’s scholarly research. The Library does not ILL recreational materials.

Requesting Items

The easiest way to request an item is directly through the library catalog.

1. Items not available from Marymount Library will be clearly identified in the catalog.

Item not owned by Marymount

2. To request the item, first click on the title to see the full record (the page that gives you additional information about the book or article).  Next, click on the button "Borrow from another library".

Borrow from another library button

3. This will bring up a form.  Be sure to fill in all the fields with asterisks.  Please use only your Marymount email address.  Your email address is how the library will contact you when your item is available, so be sure to check your Marymount email regularly.

ILL Request Form

4. After submitting your request, you will see the following screen.  You can simply close this window.  You will be contacted by the library via email when your item is available or if we have any difficulty in gettting a copy for you.

ILL Request Confirmation

5. If the record for an item you want does not show the "Borrow from another library" button or the item is not found in the catalog at all, you can still send a request by sending an email to library staff with the following information:

a. Name and preferred contact information (Marymount email or telephone).

b. Complete citation for the desired item:

  • Book: Author, Title, Publisher, Date of Publication
  • Article: Author, Article Title, Magazine/Journal Title, Volume and Date, Page Numbers

You will be contacted when the item arrives and items may be picked up at the Library. All materials that need to be returned will be clearly marked with a due date. Materials must be returned to the Library by the due date. If an item is returned to the Library late or is lost, any charges will be the responsibility of the requestor.

WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS:

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, US Codes) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries are authorized to furnish a photocopy or reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for or uses a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse or accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright.
